Flower, Morning Glory, Grandpa Ott’s - Lpomoea Purpurea
This variety could be considered the seed that sprouted a thousand seed savers. When Diane Ott Whealy’s grandfather gave her seeds of this stunning Bavarian heirloom and died shortly thereafter, she felt responsible for keeping the variety going. With her then-husband Kent Whealy, she cofounded Seed Savers Exchange, which has since grown to a collection of more than 20,000 varieties. This foundational flower deserves to be saved: beautiful glowing rich deep purple bloom with a glowing magenta center and dark 5-pointed star pattern. Quite the showstopper. Very similar to Kniola’s Purple, but with a later initial bloom time. Climbs at least 8–9' with trellising, and will self-sow but not aggressively.
