Crème
de la Crop is located in Valparaiso Indiana, about one
hour from Chicago. This growing mid-sized city has a
great deal to offer to the community with its University,
award-winning school system, and upscale businesses
and restaurants.
Founder
Leann Landgrebe Stephens realized her community was
missing a place to purchase fresh locally grown organic
produce. So in the winter of 2003, with her passion,
resources and two green thumbs, Crème de la Crop began.
The
first year of operation was a bit experimental. The
old plow was pulled out and the old corn planter was
restored. As soon as the frost was gone, three acres
were plowed. The fields were mostly planted by hand.
Soon harvesting began, and the gates were opened. People
traveled from near and far and raved about the taste
that reminded them of vegetables their grandparents
had grown. Everything sold so early in the season, there
was a second planting.
Crème
de la Crop was a success!
We
are a family farm that has become part of the Community
Supported Agriculture system, planting over 10 acres
and over 200 varieties. Our farm is chemical-free using
many conventional organic methods along with biodynamic
principles and the latest scientific techniques. Our
focus is to mend and build the soil. By working in harmony
with nature and in participation with our community,
our mission is to join with others to ensure the survival
of small farms in providing fresh wholesome food.
